The placeA private holiday home in Maruggio, in the Salento region of Puglia: an ancient, single-cone trullo restored between 2019 and 2024. A Saracen trullo on the coast, not in the hills like those of the Valle d’Itria. Why they are called Saracen nobody knows: the Saracens, it seems, had nothing to do with it. Its name appears in a mid-nineteenth-century notarial deed: corni from cornuli, the local word for the carob trees that once grew here; fiasco perhaps recalling a wine flask — this is Primitivo country.
Inside, original stone vaults define the rhythm of the house. Every element belongs to this place: handpicked antique tiles, pigment-washed walls, linen in earth tones. Two covered verandas, for breakfast and for scirocco afternoons. From the house and the rooftop terrace you can see the sea in the distance, beyond the olive trees; when the scirocco blows, you can hear it too. A private grove of olive, fig and almond trees. A pool designed with the old stone watering troughs in mind, and everything else preserved: nothing put there for effect.

Here the seasons run the other way
November – March
If you come from the north, green means summer. Here it’s the other way round: the first rains turn the fields green again, the olive trees shine and the flocks are back on the grass.
June – September
Dry grass, sand, the sea at sunset. Then fried fish, panzerotti, sun-sweet cherry tomatoes and an ice-cold Raffo. Gold, everywhere.
Between winter and summer come spring and autumn, the months we keep for ourselves.
Winter, the long way
From 1 November to 25 March the house opens to longer stays: 14 nights −14%, 21 nights −21%, 28 nights −28%. Quiet season, olive harvest, empty beaches.

Start with Maruggio’s stone lanes, then head to the sandy beaches and low dunes of the Ionian coast. Inland, Manduria is home to Primitivo. Further afield: Lecce, Matera and the white towns of the Valle d’Itria. Choose a direction for the day; return to the olive grove in the evening.
The trullo’s thick stone walls keep it cool, and every room has air conditioning. Outside, the private pool and the shade of the olive trees do the rest.

My other 1/2 and I have staying at Valerio's beautiful trullo 3 times and shall be back in 2027. That's how much we love this place, the house, the "hidden" location, the fruit trees, the visiting cats, the pool, the beaches, the bikes ... He has come up with the loveliest and most caring design for the trullo. The area is low key and the locals are super friendly. Really we ONLY have positive things to say about Corni di Fiasco!

Corni di Fiasco didn’t begin as a hospitality project. It began as a homecoming. To a place, the one where I was born. And to a time, when things were done without hurry and without the pressure to perform, accepting nature as the host and ourselves as its guests.
I am a sailor by profession, and for years my work took me far away, around the world. The more I travelled, the more I felt the need to bring home the wealth of places and people I had met, and to give new life to a piece of land that would otherwise have been left to go to ruin. I chose Maruggio.
There were no architects or designers, and no predefined style. I restored it myself, slowly, between deployments, piece by piece. Inside there is every modern comfort, yet walking in you still get the feeling you would have had fifty years ago or more in your grandmother’s house in the country. No wish to impress: only the wish to make a place for stopping, breathing and slowing down.
People often tell me the same thing after a few minutes here, about as long as it takes to drink an espresso: “Non abbiamo voglia di andare via” — we don’t want to leave.
